I used to think I had it all figured out. So many study grams have taught me that discipline and grinding into the nights is what is expected of a university student. It was simple. There were no distractions at night, the world was quiet, and it was easier to focus. But…

During my first year, I followed my usual routine of studying late into the night. As time went by though, my grades slipped, and I wasn’t retaining information at all. I was tired, drained, and just couldn’t focus.
It wasn’t until my Professor suggested that I try studying in the morning that I found my rhythm. I was skeptical, but I thought I’d give it a try. I woke up early, made myself a cup of coffee, and sat down to study. To my surprise, I felt energized and focused. I was able to absorb information, retain it, and apply it during exams.
Oftentimes, it’s easy to forget that everyone is different, and it’s essential to find the time that works best for you.
If you still don’t know how to maintain sustainable study hours, try these tips:
1. Experiment with different study routines
University is different from high school, and what worked before might not work now. Experiment with different study routines until you find the one that works best for you. Try studying in the morning, in the afternoon, and at night. Determine if you work better alone or with a group. Once you find the right study routine, stick to it and watch your grades improve.
2. Prioritize your health and well-being
Your physical and mental health are essential to your success in university. Make time for exercise, eat healthy meals, and get enough sleep. Taking care of yourself will help you feel better and stay energized during study sessions. Also, make time to take breaks and relax.
3. Find motivation in others
Build a support system and surround yourself with like-minded individuals who share similar academic and personal goals. Join online study groups like the Facebook Group Study with GenZ or LEAN Social to find study buddies. Motivate each other and hold each other accountable for your goals.
4. Don’t be afraid to ask for help
University can be challenging, and it’s okay to ask for help when you need it. Reach out to your professors, join a study group, or talk to a tutor. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and seek clarification. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness; it’s a sign that you’re committed to your success.
5. Believe in yourself and your abilities
Believing in yourself is critical to your success in university. You are capable of achieving great things, so don’t let self-doubt hold you back. Surround yourself with positive people who encourage you and celebrate your successes. Set realistic goals for yourself and work hard to achieve them. Remember, success is a journey, not a destination.
The best time to study is when you are feeling most energized and motivated. Everyone is different, so it’s important to find the time that works best for you. Whether it’s early in the morning, late at night, or during the day, make sure to take advantage of the time you have to focus on your studies and reach your goals. With dedication and hard work, you can achieve anything!
