At 16, I was a restless, energetic teenager, itching to make something of myself. My parents had never been wealthy, and the economic challenges they faced had made me determined to take control of my future. The problem was, I had no idea how to go about it. I was scouring the internet for hours with no results.

Sometimes, the best opportunities will look for you if you try hard enough

But something amazing happened. One day, I got a call back from a local bookstore. They were looking for a part-time clerk, and I was over the moon. It wasn’t the most glamorous job, but it was a start.

Working at the bookstore taught me the value of hard work and perseverance. I showed up on time, day in and day out, even when I didn’t feel like it. And slowly, I began to realize that my attitude was making a difference. Customers appreciated my friendly smile and helpful demeanor, and my bosses took note of my dedication.

If you are starting out on your new part-time job, I have a few lessons to share:

1. Embrace challenges and learn from them

Challenges in life may seem daunting at first, but they can help you grow and learn important lessons. Embrace challenges, take them on with determination, and learn from your experiences. Remember that every challenge is an opportunity for personal growth and development.

2. Value hard work and dedication

Success in life comes from hard work and dedication. Whether you’re working at a bookstore or studying at university, value the importance of hard work and dedication. Be committed to your goals, show up on time, and give your best effort every day. Your dedication will be noticed and appreciated.

3. Find motivation in others

As a university student, it’s important to build a support system and surround yourself with like-minded individuals who share similar academic and personal goals. You can join online Facebook groups like Study with GenZ or try using a website like LEAN Social to find study buddies.

4. Practice resilience in the face of adversity

Resilience is the ability to bounce back from setbacks and adversity. It’s an important trait to cultivate in life, especially as a university student. You may face difficult situations, such as failing a test or struggling with a class, but don’t let these setbacks define you. Keep pushing forward, learn from your mistakes, and practice resilience.

5. Take control of your future

Your future is in your hands. Don’t wait for opportunities to come to you – take control of your future by setting goals, creating a plan, and taking action. Believe in yourself, be proactive, and don’t be afraid to take risks. Your determination and initiative will set you on a path to success.

In the years since then, I’ve moved on to bigger and better things. But I look back on that time with fondness and gratitude. The challenge of finding a job at 16 may have seemed daunting, but it taught me invaluable lessons about the importance of hard work, resilience, and taking control of my future.

So if you’re facing a similar challenge, don’t give up. Keep pushing forward, and you never know what amazing things might come from it.
